David Hammons

David Hammons was born in Springfield, IL in 1943 and later moved to Los Angeles to study art. He primarily creates pieces that are influenced by African American culture. Many of his pieces are made from things he found in his community. He also created the African American flag which represented African American culture is American culture. He goes against the grain when it comes to conventional art practices and does things in his own "radical" way. I appreciate seeing black artists portraying the culture in a way that I don't know I would have ever done before. Using hair or bottle caps or wire to create these pieces.    Powerpoint

Project Mock Up

For my final installation project, I've finally finalized it down to one project instead of the initial 3 I had when I first proposed the projects. I settled on the larger-scale cyanotype prints that I want instead of just mounting them on a wall I want them to hang like sheets hanging outside to dry. With the addition of blue lights possibly using gels and a couple fans to have the prints lightly billowing in the wind. I also settled roughly on the subject matter of the prints. I decided to continue a project I started last year looking at emotion and how many of us put on a mask that hides our true feelings. Plus I wanted to through some landscapes possibly on the walls of whatever space I might be in. Below are some test prints that I did this weekend including shots I did last spring and some feathers I found outside. \

Project Proposal

For the final project, I came up with a few project ideas because I struggled with making one single definitive decision. I have them in order of how much I want to do them. Cyanotype Project- My top choice is creating large-scale cyanotypes with other prints that supplement the cyanotypes. I plan to experiment with the subject matter a bit. I also wanted to do the project in an environment where I could play with the lighting and also utilize sound to create a sensory environment. Also, most of the art I do is fairly small in size so this will allow me to create some larger pieces.                           Harry Potter Door- The second option that I am also interested in is filling the space under the stairs with a bunch of photos. Possibly of the house or people or anything. I also would like to involve sound and light in this project as well. The issue with this project was that it is off campus and I wanted my project to be viewed in person by not just the people in the class b
