For this project, I decided to take random photos of friends last week and then I did a studio shoot. I wanted to focus on how both have very different visual styles and effort placed into each of them. The photos I took of my friends out and about was on my small digital camera that I bought for $30 and use when I can't carry an actual camera around. It has a pretty aggressive flash which for a lot of people washes them out in the pictures. I felt like people naturally either smiled or made goofy faces when I used that camera walking around. I also just took some at random and you can tell because some folks look like I set off a stun grenade. The studio shots felt more serious than the random shots outside despite the fact I randomly did it and put little to no thought into the shots. The conditions were very similar but yet the studio shots felt plain and static which made me question the influence of space and how I took the photos. I also probably could've put more effort into the shoot which might have changed the vibe. I kind of had this quote in mind while working on this project, “The amateur can afford to lose. The professional tends to classify and to specialize, to accept uncritically the groundrules of the environment”. I took them with the goal of them being amateur raw pictures taken very quickly while I was out experiencing life mixed with a contrast of studio shots that are supposed to feel the opposite. Overall,  I just took my cameras around and took a bunch of random pictures and honestly had fun doing it.

  1. I like how you think about and compare the studio shots to candid photos. The serious and pristine location might not get the effect you are looking for when it's all too planned out, rather than in the moment. At the studio, you will never see the geek bar.

  2. I enjoy the mix of the random photo and studio shot. It provided contrast between organized shots and the casual shots. While both are great medium that delivered meaningful message, but they give out some differences with their vibes.
